How to Install a 2×2 MIMO Directional Antenna for Better 5G Performance?

Release time:2026.10.13

A good external antenna can really boost the performance of a 4G or 5G router, but simply connecting an antenna is not enough. The installation location, cable connection, and antenna orientation all affect the final result.
This guide uses the Maswell AN_Master_001-2 2×2 MIMO directional antenna as an example to explain how to install and optimize an external 5G antenna.

Step 1: Find a Suitable Installation Location
Before installing the antenna, find a spot with a strong, stable signal. Android users can check RSRP with apps like LTE Discovery to compare signal strength. For iPhone, use the built-in Field Test Mode by dialing *3001#12345#* and checking the available cellular measurements for RSRP.

A value closer to 0 dBm generally indicates a stronger signal. Walk around the building and compare several practical installation points. In the video test, the signal changed noticeably from one position to another, ranging from around -99 dB to -79 dB.

However, the strongest signal point was not necessarily the most practical installation point. A location that is easy to mount and allows the antenna to face the signal source is often a better choice.

Step 2: Prepare the Equipment
The Maswell AN_Master_001-2 is a 2×2 MIMO directional antenna with two signal channels. It supports a wide frequency range from 600 to 8000 MHz and is designed for outdoor use. The package shown in the test includes the antenna, two approximately 2-meter SMA cables, mounting brackets, screws, and an installation manual.

A separate power source is not required because the antenna is powered through the router connection.
Before installation, check that your 4G/5G router or CPE has compatible external antenna ports. If longer cables are required, plan the cable route carefully and avoid unnecessary cable length.

Step 3: Connect the AN_Master_001-2 to Your 5G Router

First, disconnect the router's built-in antenna connections. Then connect the two antenna cables to the router's external antenna ports and connect the other ends to the two ports of the AN_Master_001-2.

Make sure both MIMO connections are securely attached. Once connected, the antenna can transmit the RF power to the router without an additional power source.

Step 4: Install and Orient the Antenna
For outdoor installation, the antenna can be mounted on a wall or pole using the supplied hardware. Position it where the cellular signal is stronger and keep the antenna oriented toward the signal source.

Do not assume that placing the antenna outdoors automatically guarantees better performance. In the test, moving the antenna outdoors increased the download speed in some cases, but the latency was still affected by the installation position. This shows why finding the right location and orientation is just as important as the physical connection.

Step 5: Test and Optimize the Connection
After installation, run several speed tests and compare download speed, upload speed, and latency with the router's built-in antennas.
In the video, the router initially achieved around 94 Mbps download with its built-in antennas.
After connecting the Maswell antenna indoors, the download speed reached about 300 Mbps.

Further tests with different outdoor positions reached around 400 Mbps, with a later test reaching approximately 428 Mbps. At the same time, latency varied considerably between locations.

These results show something important: the best installation is not simply the one with the highest download speed. A balanced connection with good download, upload, and latency performance is the real goal.

Conclusion
Installing a 2×2 MIMO directional antenna is easy enough, but getting the best performance requires more than simply connecting the cables. Start by checking the signal, choose a practical installation location, connect both MIMO channels correctly, and then fine-tune the antenna's position and direction through real-world testing.

With the Maswell AN_Master_001-2, a suitable installation can give a 4G/5G router a stronger and more flexible external antenna setup for demanding network environments.
